WebThe mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidases possess a core consisting of three protein subunits. These subunits are encoded by the mitochondrial genome. Subunit I is the largest subunit and possesses between 500 and 600 amino acid residues. It binds heme a as well as the heme a3 –Cu B binuclear center and is the major catalytic subunit.
